1/6/2024 0 Comments The wisdom of traumaUnderstandably for many of us trauma is what is otherwise known as the Big T stuff. Violence, rape, sexual abuse, severe childhood neglect, disasters, catastrophic events and so on. But there are little ’T’s too - bullying (could also be Big T), not being parented or cared for as we should have been, important needs for love, affection and connection not being met, being in situations for which we did not have enough internal resources at the time, being ridiculed and so on. These ‘smaller’ events also have an impact. Especially in sensitive or immature nervous systems.Įach of us is wired differently. It is the nervous system of the recipient that determines the level of impact and, the degree of the trauma response. A young child without a fully developed brain will struggle to manage an overwhelming event without the support of an attuned caregiver. A highly sensitive individual of whatever age could experience a traumatic response to a small T event in the same overwhelming way that a less sensitive person might experience a Big T event. The impact is personal. Trauma is what happens to us on the inside. It is not the event. This is a vital distinction. Trauma is not what happens to you, but what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.My work, passion and purpose increasingly has a bias towards trauma. It just seems to show up in my work, not that I name it as such, It’s more of a quiet observation that I make and then, I get to work. The interview featured in the documentary between Gabor Maté did and Russel Brand is also listed on this website if you want to check that out here. You seriously do not want to miss this masterpiece. The film speaks for itself, it may help you understand your own condition more thoroughly or perhaps that of a friend or family member and allow you to see the reasons behind these debilitating conditions. The documentary film featuring the magnificent compassionate work of Dr Gabor Maté is presented alongside a week's worth of fascinating talks and lectures from other experts in the field such as Dr Howard Schubiner, Steve Ozanich, and other names you may recognise such as Richard Schwartz (Internal Family Systems), Bessel Van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score) Peter A Levine (Somatic Experiencing), Tara Brach (Psychologist & meditation teacher) and many many more. Gabor Maté presents the idea and importance of creating a completely trauma-informed society in which families, teachers, doctors, people in power such as governments and solicitors become much less concerned with fixing behaviours, handing out consequences, only treating individual symptoms and judging individuals for the manifestations of their trauma but instead really understanding the root causes of our behaviours and illnesses stemming from our individual or collective/generational traumas. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. Trauma is an invisible force that shapes our lives. Trauma affects all of us, whether we had great upbringings or not, what happens to us and those around us throughout our lives can leave lasting imprints in our psychology and physiology that can lead to mental health conditions, mental and physical illness, addiction and as we're well aware of already in this community - chronic pain and other persistent debilitating conditions. The Wisdom of Trauma Documentary featuring Dr Gabor MatéĪlthough heartbreaking to watch this subject is so critical for us to understand, for EVERY human.
